I figured it out by accident just disabling certain devices in device manager one by one and attempting to put the pc to sleep. I've always visited tomshardware for years looking up problems other people have had, but almost always able to solve my own problems by Google-ing. However I installed an update from Microsoft yesterday (9/21/12) KB2709981 and lo and behold everything is fixed! As you can see in the screenshot, I use only one device to wake up my computer, which is my keyboard, (I've always used this device in the past).
